Thomas Souster Architecture is an independent, RIBA Chartered architectural practice established in 2020 and based in Exeter, Devon.

I specialise in bespoke new-build homes, residential extensions, renovations, listed buildings and barn conversions across Devon and Cornwall.

The practice is design-led, combining creative architectural solutions with strong technical expertise and a commitment to sustainability. I provide a personal service, working directly with clients from initial ideas and feasibility studies through planning permission, Building Regulations, technical design and construction.

My thoughts on design

The practice is design-led and founded on strong technical design and sustainability principles.

Scandinavian and Japanese architecture are key influences.

My style has been described as warm minimalism, focusing on natural materials and structures that are subtly detailed to express their inherent beauty and form.

A soft threshold between indoor and outdoor spaces is central to my approach. Landscape design is considered a natural continuation of the architecture, creating a seamless relationship between the home and its surroundings.

Having lived and worked in Devon throughout my life, I have a deep appreciation for its landscapes and architectural character. I believe the most successful buildings respond sensitively to their setting, drawing upon materials, forms and details that belong to the place.

Since establishing the practice in 2020, I have developed strong working relationships with local planning authorities across Devon and Cornwall, including South Hams, Teignbridge, Dartmoor National Park, East Devon, Exeter and Cornwall.

I have built a trusted network of consultants and contractors, allowing me to bring together experienced teams tailored to each project.

Over the years, I have developed a strong track record of securing planning permission for complex and challenging sites, as well as delivering technically demanding projects with careful attention to programme, budget and quality.

I live in central Exeter with my wife, who is also an architect. Outside the studio, I spend as much time as possible surfing along the north coast and walking on Dartmoor.
