North Lodge

North Lodge was originally constructed in the mid-19th century as the entrance lodge to Lympstone Manor, overlooking the Exe Estuary in Devon.

The project involves the sensitive renovation of the original lodge, alongside the removal of unsympathetic later additions and the introduction of a substantial contemporary extension.

The design brings together traditional Devon architecture and contemporary detailing, with a restrained palette of natural stone, timber and glass. Two distinct building forms are connected by a lightweight glazed link, creating a clear architectural relationship between old and new.

Careful consideration has been given to the scale, proportions and positioning of the new accommodation, allowing the building to sit comfortably within its mature landscaped setting. The design prioritises natural light, views towards the estuary and a strong connection between the interior and surrounding gardens.

A fabric-first approach to the renovation, combined with high levels of insulation and modern renewable technologies, will significantly improve the energy performance and comfort of the home while preserving the character of the original lodge.
