Rocky Hill Extension

This project was undertaken during my time at Clifton Emery Design Ltd, where I was the lead architect throughout the design and construction phases.

Rocky Hill is a contemporary extension to a 1930s semi-detached house in Tavistock, Devon, set within a leafy site with panoramic views across the Dartmoor landscape.

The brief was to create a light-filled, open-plan, multifunctional living space that maximised natural daylight, framed the surrounding landscape and strengthened the connection between the house and garden.

With a relatively constrained site, one of the key design challenges was ensuring the extension sat comfortably alongside the existing house without dominating the building or its surroundings.

Carefully positioned glass-to-glass corner windows help reduce the perceived mass of the extension, giving the architecture a lighter appearance while providing uninterrupted views across the landscape. The contemporary timber cladding complements the natural setting, creating a sensitive contrast with the original 1930s house.
